About us

Natyashala was founded on 13th January, 1981 by Mrs. Kanchan Sontakke and was registered as Natyashala Charity Trust with Charity Commissioner Office on 1st December 1982 (Registration no. E-9094)

Natyashala’s unique and innovative methods of conducting creative and multifarious cultural activities with children and teachers all over India have changed the approach towards children’s theatre training and teacher-training workshops. The programmes in performing arts have contributed wonderfully to the integration and rehabilitation of the children with shortcomings and various disabilities. Natyashala’s child-centric activities are result oriented with an integrated approach, involving children with disabilities and their able-bodied peers in the same group. Use of performing arts as a therapy, a mode of education and rehabilitation have been applauded and appreciated by stalwarts in the field of education and culture.

Natyashala has been a mentor to the children with hearing & visually impairment, orthopaedic & intellectually handicaps and special educators in the field of Creative Dramatics, Educational Drama, Therapeutic Drama, Vocal & Instrumental Music, Dance, Puppetry, Rope-Pole Mallkhamb, Art & Crafts. The Institute has catered to over 25000 children, 8000 teachers and has so far staged over 1500 shows of 90 plays.

Natyashala’s state and national cultural festivals like Balotsav, Umang, Jallosh and Drama Competitions have given artists with disabilities a platform to display their talent and prove their abilities.

Natyashala established a `Rural Centre For Training and Rehabilitation through Performing Arts’ at Kanhe taluka-Maval, dist- Pune. (2003 to 2013)

Natyashala is registered under Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Act, 1976 - Registration No. 083781183

Donations to Natyashala are exempted under 80G of Income Tax Act 1956
